A UNIQUE EQUESTRIAN ADVENTURE IN MANIPUR – The birthplace of modern polo

The small state of Manipur in northeast India is known as the birthplace of modern day polo.  For centuries  horsemen across the Asian world  had  played games which could all  be considered the pre-cursor of polo but it was in Manipur in the 1800’s that some British soldiers & residence after seeing  the  local  game  of  Sagol  Kangj ei,  refined  the  game,  gave  it  some  rules  and  created  the sport  that  we  know  today  as  polo  (from  the  Tibetan  word  pulu).  The  Manipuris  are  still enthusiastic players of the game which they play on the small, indigenous Manipur Pony.

In  January  2016  Manipur  hosted  the  first  international  women’s  polo  team  visit  to  India. Manipur  is  home  to the  only  all  girls’  polo teams  in  India  and  the  visiting  USPA  women’s team played  with  4  of  these  teams  in  the  1st  Manipur  Statehood  Day  Women’s  Polo  Tournament. This  is  now  an  annual  event  and  in  2019 the tournament  hosted  6 teams  including teams from Argentina, Canada, Kenya and the USA.

In  conjunction with  Hun-tre!  Adventures we  have  devised  an  itinerary  so  you  can join  in the excitement and travel to  Manipur to watch the game of  polo as  it was originally conceived, we will  also  take  you  further  afield  to  see  the  beauty  of  this  remote  state  which  held  a  pivotal position during the WW2.
